Light in the Darkness: Saying Yes to Hope

Lindsay Corcoran and family are dedicated Global Hope family volunteers. Lindsay is an Occupational Therapist and a passionate advocate for all of God's children.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5 (NIV)

Several years ago, a volunteer named Wesley joined Global Hope on a mission trip to Kenya. At first, he was overwhelmed by the poverty he witnessed—the children lacked clean water, shoes, and often went to bed hungry. But as the days went by, Wesley saw something deeper: a profound joy and resilience in the children that stirred his heart. Their laughter in the midst of struggle, their hope despite scarcity, became a mirror for Wesley’s own life. He came to realize that while he had so much in terms of material comfort, he had often felt spiritually empty. It was in serving these children that Wesley discovered a deeper well of strength and faith within himself. Their courage gave him perspective on what really matters in life: not what we own, but how we give. Helping them became a form of healing for his own soul. Through their needs, Wesley encountered Christ—and in saying yes to them, he found his own path to spiritual renewal and purpose.

Meditation

Take a moment to pause and reflect. Where have you found strength in your own suffering? In what ways did God reveal light to you when you felt surrounded by darkness? Ask yourself: How can I embody this scripture in my daily life? What does it mean to be a light-bearer for children facing deep struggles? As you consider these questions, say this simple prayer: “God of light, help me to see where I can shine hope into another’s darkness. Give me the courage to say yes, even when I feel uncertain. Let my giving be a reflection of Your love. Amen.”
